September is always an interesting time for movies. Awards season is starting to peak around the corner. But we haven’t quite made it out of Summer movie season yet. The result is something for everybody! And who doesn’t love that? Below is the list of September 2019 movies we’re most excited about. We’re sure you’ll find some to get excited about too.
IT: Chapter 2 – September 6
We’ve been waiting for this movie for two years, and it has finally arrived. Unfortunately, It has also arrived. And now The Losers Club – who are all looking incredible, by the way! – have to kill him. Alexander Skarsgard returns as the murderous dancing clown Pennywise. He’s opposite an absolutely all-star cast playing the grown up Losers (James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, and Isaiah Mustafa). Directed by Andy Muschietti, this movie already has us on the edge of our seats!
The Goldfinch – September 13
Not sure whether or not award season has officially kicked off yet? Well, The Goldfinch is based on a Pulitzer Prize winning novel. It is directed by John Crowley, and stars Ansel Elgort, Sarah Pouson, Jeffrey Wright, and Nicole Kidman. And it’s slated to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8. So yeah, we’d say it’s an awards contender. Now, does it have a chance to go all the way to February? Probably not. But who knows? That’s the fun of being back in Awards season. Well that, and getting to watch good movies again.
Rambo: Last Blood – September 20
Rambo: Last Blood is the kind of film title that prompts the audience to let out an almost involuntary “Do you promise?” In an era of reboots, franchises, and revivals, maybe it’s surprising that we haven’t seen Sly Stallone back in his element sooner. After all, the man’s a member of the MCU. Which did you expect to happen first: Stallone the Space Pirate or another Rambo movie? Either way, here we are. And because I’m in an abusive podcast relationship, we’ll be covering Last Blood this month on The Watchmen. So even if you don’t see the movie, at least check in with the pod to hear all about it. Especially because of what I’m getting out of the deal…
Downton Abbey – September 20
That’s right! It’s finally time to go back! Years after the Masterpiece Classic series left our airwaves, we’re getting a full fledged motion picture about the Crawley family and their very fancy home. Is it necessary? Absolutely not. Was anybody even asking for it? Unlikely. But am I absolutely thrilled to see Mary and all her fancy family members live a life of privilege and luxury on the big screen, while her servants deal with the problems of everyday folks? You bet I am! In exchange for being forced to sit through Rambo, I’ve also convinced Deepak to cover Downton on a very fancy bonus episode of The Watchmen. So be sure to check back for that.
Abominable – September 27
Abominable is the kind of movie that I’m surprised there isn’t more hype around. The DreamWorks animated picture has an outside shot at being a Best Animated Feature nominee at the 2020 Oscars. And even putting its award prospects aside for a minute, it just looks like a great fun movie! The film is about a group of Chinese teenagers trying to get their magical Yeti friend back to his family on top of Mount Everest. It’s a simple, straightforward, plot that contains space for the exact kind of fun you want from a good animated film. And it looks beautiful!
Wait… awards prospects? Cool monster? Exciting adventure story? It has visual appeal?! Forget everything else we talked about in this article. Just go see Abominable five times.
But in all seriousness, what are you excited to see this month? Do you already have your tickets in hand for one of these movies? Or did we leave your favorite picture off our list?
