Doctor Who Season 10

  • Moffat’s final episode is the 2017 Christmas special.
  • Capaldi’s last episode is the 2017 Christmas special.
  • Each season takes about nine months to film. Capaldi was announced in August 2013. Expect around the same time frame for Doctor 13.
  • Filming for season 10 began in June and should be just about wrapped up this month. There is some speculation that Capaldi will actually regenerate in the season finale, not the Christmas special. If that’s the case that will likely be filmed at a later date. More on that later.
  • Reports out of the BBC claim that the company is worried about merchandising and ratings around the world. They want to fix that problem by casting a young male star to travel along a female costar. Pearl Mackie’s Bill fits the description for the costar, but reports are that BBC wants to give incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall a clean slate for 2018. We’ll see what that means for Mackie. Right now she’s only on a one-year contract.

Guest Stars

  • Season nine writer Peter Harness has said he would like to bring back the character of Ian Chesterton, one of the First Doctor’s first companions. In the 50th anniversary, we learned that Chesterton is the Chairman of the Governors for the Coal Hill School where he once taught. This is the same school where Clara teaches.
  • Georgia Moffett was spotted on set with Capaldi during filming. She played the Doctor’s genetic daughter in season four. BBC claims it was just a social visit, but Steven Moffat requested the character survive her run on the show. If he’s got any ideas left for her, now’s the time to use them.
  • Osgood might be back but she will not be a companion.
  • Maisie Williams is not expected to return.
  • John Barrowman said recently that he’s working on a secret project in Cardiff. That has led to a lot of speculation that Captain Jack may be back with the Doctor this season.
  • Michelle Gomez will be back as Missy this season. More on that later.
  • Capaldi has said that he would like to see Caroline Ford return to the show. Ford was the Doctor’s granddaughter and first companion over 50 years ago. Capaldi already appears to be getting a lot crossed off his wishlist this season, so don’t count this out for sure.
  • Matt Lucas will be back. He’s appeared in two Christmas Specials: “The Husbands of River Song” and “The Return of Doctor Mysterio” as Nardole. He will definitely be in the season 10 premiere and may be in further episodes as well.
  • David Suchet, the actor who played the title role on the BBC’s Poirot will be a guest star this season.

The Plot

This season will be 12 episodes long.. Writers and directors are known for all episodes, even if titles are not.

  8. TBA, directed by Wayne Yip and written by Toby Whithouse

  11. TBA, directed by Rachel Talalay and written by Steven Moffat
  12. TBA, directed by Rachel Talalay and written by Steven Moffat
  • The two-part season finale will feature the original Cybermen from the planet Mondas. Capaldi has said these are his personal favorite Who monsters and he’s been excited about bringing them back for some time. This variation of the Cybermen were last seen in ‘The Tenth Planet’, the first time the Doctor ever regenerated. This has led to specualtion that Capaldi will actually regenerate into the 13th Doctor in this season’s finale.
  • The Daleks are back.
  • Missy is back, presumably in a bigger role than the last time we saw her.
  • This season will introduce new monsters, The Monks, which look pretty creepy.
  • The Doctor will return to Gallifrey this season.
  • There is rumored to be a season-long theme around the word “truth” so keep an eye out for that word on signs and banners in different episodes.

But what do you think? Who do you expect to see this season? Where do you hope the Doctor goes next? Do you have a pick for who plays the next regeneration? Let us know in the comments and be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook for all the latest Doctor Who news.
