Tomorrow night Agents of Shield resumes for the final stretch of its fourth season. ABC has revealed that in this week’s episode Mallory Jansen will assume her third role in the show. In the first episode she debuted as Dr. Radcliffe’s original life model decoy (LMD) Aida, a role she continues to play, halfway through the season she appeared as the same Dr. Radcliffe’s former love interest Agnes Kitsworth, with a cancer diagnosis, and now she will appear as Madame Hydra in Dr. Radcliffe’s framework. Which raises an interesting question, who is Madame Hydra?
Comic Book Page
Madame Hydra is most simply described as your typical attractive female comic book villain. She does bad things to good people, and manipulates bad people. Orphaned in Hungary, Ophelia Sarkissian was raised by the Hydra operative known as Kraken. She was raised to be the perfect Hydra agent a tactical genius, skilled fighter, and manipulative leader. She eventually was given the title Madame Hydra and appointed as a high level leader in Hydra. At this time she was primarily an enemy to Captain America and S.H.I.E.L.D., typical of any Hydra operative. After nearly dying she left Hydra for a time and through some unsavory means took upon herself the mantle of Viper. This iteration of the character appeared as the secondary villain in Fox’s The Wolverine. Though some liberties were taken with that version of the character. As Viper, she became first and foremost a terrorist with regular interactions with the X-Men; she also pursued a side hobby of attempting to take the lead of any organization that had an affinity for snakes. This went well for her, as far as villainy ever goes for a villain in a comic book. Then Viper had a run in with Hydra’s new Madame Hydra. During the confrontation both women died. Hive, who was featured in Agents of Shield season three resurrected Viper and reinstated her as Madame Hydra. From that point on she has served in the comic books as a semi-regular foe to the Avengers.

The role Madame Hydra has in Agents of Shield is sure to vary quite a bit from her comic book counterpart. To fully explore her likely role we will need to talk about some details for the current season of Agents of Shield. Consider this your spoiler warning.
Currently in Agents of Shield Dr. Radcliffe believes he has created the cure for all death and suffering by creating the framework, a hyper realistic virtual reality. He has with the help of his Android LMD Aida trapped many members of Shield in the framework and given them new and perfect realities, from his perspective. The story currently follows Elizabeth Henstridge’s Jemma Simmons and Chloe Bennet’s Daisy Johnson as they knowingly enter the framework to locate and save their teammates and friends. In this alternate reality Hydra has been resurrected as a replacement for S.H.I.E.L.D. It appears that Madame Hydra will be the head of Hydra in the framework reality. What makes this interesting is Agnes Kitsworth was placed into the framework before the cnacer took her life, will she be Madame Hydra? It is hard to believe that is the perfect reality Dr. Radcliffe designed for the kind woman he loved. Especially considering the long amounts of time Dr. Radcliffe himself happily spent in the framework, likely with his lover. The other potential identity of Madame Hydra is a copy of the cold android Aida in virtual form. Aida has shown a desire to be more perfect as to better fulfill her programming to protect the framework. Her android self is doing so on the outside, who better than a virtual self to fulfill that role on the massive program’s inside.
The executive producers of Agents of Shield had this to say about Madame Hydra and Mallory Jansen, “Since we’re bringing back Hydra in the Framework, we thought we’d bring it back with a force to be reckoned with. Madame Hydra is a villain with the perfect combo of strength, sexy, and scary. We’ve thrown many challenges Mallory’s way and she’s always up for the task. We’re excited for fans to see how she makes Madame Hydra come to life.” As fans we look forward to seeing this character come to life in such a unique situation. It is sure to make for an exciting conclusion to the second best season of Agents of Shield!
